“Are you able to drink the cup that I drink?”

When someone drinks from the cup of philanthropy, one drinks from a cup that is full of bitterness and sweetness (Rom. 5:7). It is the cup of life and also the cup of martyrdom. “Are you able to drink the cup that I drink, or be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” (Mark 10:28) This is a question that we face in all the facets of our diaconia. Can we live all the joys and sorrows which appear in our daily life within God’s philanthropy? Many times, it is easily to answer in a positive way, but most of the time the great responsibility that this philanthropy holds causes us to respond in a negative way. In these difficult moments, this calling becomes even more intense: “Let me taste the cup and call on the name of the Lord!” We can only drink of this cup if we believe that it is the cup of salvation. This cup is the cup of salvation as much as we cultivate our faith and our love for the Father, as much as our life is founded in the life of the Holy Spirit in and through the Eucharist.
